The Process - The Choice
I figure the best way to begin is to just go for it, so here is the first post on this blog.
Choosing an idea to move forward with is challenging, to say the least, as I have so many options I could pursue and study that would each be interesting and fun to dive into.
I could go with a typical choice, talk about the future, well, an aspect of it, and how things will likely advance or are looking to be advancing in technology or otherwise.
I could also take the environmental route, I might talk about carbon emissions, efficiency, and better building practices.
I could also follow the affordability path, look into why housing has become so expensive, why it's so hard to get an apartment that's both affordable and close enough to campus to not feel like it's the same as my hour commute from home.
Of all these choices, each one still affects my life, just in different ways. Whichever path of research I may be leaning towards or that I may take, I feel they all have an audience that I can relate with and they all have relevance today.
It is so hard to choose because I just keep thinking, whatever I pick I am going to be looking into for the next year, I better pick something I really want because I am gonna have to do a lot of work on it. It's really scary to be honest, because it feels like there's this pressure to make the right decision and it gets overwhelming at times.
I'd think about designs in your past that are memorable as a start. Maybe you could talk about experiential architecture/how an average person perceives a well known building by famous architects? Or something you used to or still have a hobby with and how that could be integrated into design? That way you'll be motivated to push through the semester with your research!
ReplyDeleteI think an interesting route would be to discuss affordability of housing in terms of better building practices- how to create lasting structures at an affordable price? What do we value most as a society, money or environmentally conscious design? What can be done to equalize these values and get the best of both worlds? I like how you are moving towards issues that are relevant to your life! Asking these sorts of questions will not only help to narrow your focus, but make evident what topics are most meaningful/applicable from a research standpoint!
